Haa vs Ha — ح vs ه

Two kinds of h: the breathy, throaty h (ح) and the plain English h (ه). Learn to hear and say both.

✦ Tap any Arabic word to hear it pronounced

Arabic has two different “h” sounds — and English speakers hear them as the same letter until someone points it out. ه (Ha) is the plain h you already know. ح (Haa) is deeper, breathier, and made further down the throat. This is one of the sounds that gives Arabic its famous texture.

Meet the pair

Tap each letter. Say them back to back and notice where the air comes from.

Ha

ha

a light h, like in 'house'

The key difference

ح is pushed up from deep in the throat — it sounds like warm breath squeezed through a narrow throat. ه is a gentle puff from the top of the windpipe, exactly like the English h.

How to find ح

Here’s the trick that works for almost everyone:

  1. Whisper the word “ahh” like the doctor asks you to.
  2. Now push that whisper down into your throat until it gets a little scratchy, like you’re fogging up a window from deep down.
  3. That scratchy, breathy sound is ح.

Compare it to ه: say “h” in house — light, at the very top, no scratch. The two live in different parts of your throat.

Where each sound is made

ح comes from the deepest part of the throat (the pharynx); ه is made right at the voice box, high up.

The words that prove it

These pairs are separated only by which “h” you use.

Minimal pairs — ح vs ه

Classic confusion: حُبّ (hubb) means love — the most beautiful word in Arabic, and it starts with the deep ح. Say it from your chest, not your nose, and you’ve got it.

Tap any word to hear it. The ح words feel warmer and deeper; the ه words stay light.
