Daal vs Daad — د vs ض

Arabic's famous letter: the emphatic d (ض) versus the plain d (د). Learn the sound that gave Arabic its name.

✦ Tap any Arabic word to hear it pronounced

Here’s a fun fact: Arabic is nicknamed “the language of the Ḍād”لُغَة الضَّاد — because of the letter ض (Daad), a sound found almost nowhere else on Earth. In this lesson you’ll learn to tell it apart from its light cousin د (Daal).

Meet the pair

Tap each letter. The plain د is easy. The emphatic ض is the challenge — and the prize.

a deep, emphatic d — the famous one

The key difference

ض is the heavy version of د: same tongue position, but the tongue flattens, the throat tightens, and the sound comes out bigger and deeper — like a d with extra gravity.

The sound that made a language famous

ض is one of the “heavy team” (ط ظ ص ض). To make it:

  1. Start with a normal د — “d” as in door.
  2. Now flatten your tongue, pull it back just a little, tense your throat, and let the “d” come out heavier — almost like you’re pushing it through honey.

English speakers tend to soften ض into a normal d. The fix is the opposite: make it heavier, not lighter. When you hear Arabic speakers stress a word, chances are a heavy letter like ض is doing the work.

Where each sound is made

Same spot for both — the difference is all in the tongue’s tension.

د

The words that prove it

These pairs show how one heavy letter changes everything.

Minimal pairs — د vs ض

Spot the difference: دَبّ (a lizard creeping) vs ضَبّ (the lizard). Same “d” sound, different weight. Say the pair out loud until the heavy one feels natural.

Fill your word bank
