The Arabic Letter Ha (ه) — How to Pronounce & Write

Tap to listen

ha

Harakat

Ha is the twenty-sixth letter of the Arabic alphabet and the softest-sounding letter you’ll learn early on. It’s the Arabic equivalent of the English “h” — a gentle, breathy sound made in the throat. Unlike most Arabic letters, Ha has no close lookalike in shape. Its form changes dramatically depending on its position in a word, making it one of the more visually interesting letters to master.

How to pronounce it

Ha is a consonant. It’s pronounced /h/ — the same sound as the English “h” in “hat,” “hello,” or “home.”

  • Tip: Open your throat slightly and let air flow out gently — it’s a soft, breathy sound. Think of fogging up a mirror with your breath. That light puff is the Arabic Ha.
  • Common mistake: Don’t confuse Ha (ه) with Haa (ح). Ha (ه) is soft and voiced like English “h.” Haa (ح) is a deeper, voiceless sound from the middle of the throat — it has no English equivalent and sounds like a forceful whisper.

  2. 2Continue around the rounded loop and close the shape

Ha has the most dramatic shape changes of any Arabic letter. Its form varies significantly depending on position, which is unique in the alphabet.

Middleـهـيَوْهِبyawhib
Endـهكِتَابُهkitaabuh

Key rule: When Ha starts a word, it looks like a small loop with two “arms” extending from it. In the middle, it becomes a small circle. At the end, it opens into a larger loop. This shape transformation is one of the first things you’ll notice as you read more Arabic.

Watch out for: ه vs. ح vs. خ

These three “h” letters sound different and look different:

هsoft hEnglish “h” in “hat”هنا (here)
حdeep hforceful whisperحال (condition)
خkhScottish “lochخبز (bread)

The key: ه is the only one that sounds like the English “h.” The other two are deeper throat sounds with no direct English equivalent.

Practice tip

Write Ha ten times in each position, paying close attention to the shape changes. Then try these words:

هُ + وَ = هُوَ (he) هِ + يَ = هِيَ (she)

Say them out loud. The “h” sound should be soft and breathy — like a gentle sigh. Practice distinguishing between ه, ح, and خ by listening for the “weight” of each sound.

The hidden ha at the end of words

Ha hides in plain sight as a possessive ending. Attach -hu for his or -haa for her: kitaab (book) becomes kitaabuhaa (her book), and bayt (house) becomes baytuhu (his house). One tiny letter does the work of an entire English phrase.

You will hear it in the pronoun pair huwa and hiya (he and she) as well. Once you start spotting this final ha, whole families of common words suddenly explain themselves — a small unlock with a big payoff in reading.

Frequently asked questions

How is ه different from ح?

Ha is the light, breathy h of English hello, made in the mouth. Haa is the deep, constricted pharyngeal whisper with no English equivalent.

Why does ha change shape so much?

Its isolated form is a rounded loop, but connected it reduces to a tiny curl. Few letters transform as dramatically across positions.

What is the ha at the end of many words?

Often a possessive pronoun: -hu (his) or -haa (her). Bayt + ha gives baytuhaa, her house — one small letter doing the work of an English phrase.
