ت (Taa) is the plain English “t”. ط (Tah) is the heavy t — one of Arabic’s emphatic letters, just like ص from the last lesson. Same shape on the page, very different sound in the mouth.
Meet the pair
Tap each letter. The difference is a feeling: ت is light, ط is heavy.
tap to listen
Taa
taa
a light t, like in 'tea'
tap to listen
Tah
tah
a heavy, emphatic t
The key difference
Tah (ط) is made with the tongue flatter and further back, the throat slightly tightened, and the mouth tensed. The t comes out heavier and darker than the crisp, light t of Taa (ت).
The heavy team
ط is part of Arabic’s “heavy” family (ط ظ ص ض). They all share one trick: the tongue flattens and pulls back, and the sound turns deep and resonant.
Try this:
- Say a normal ت — crisp, light, English-style.
- Now say ط — but keep your tongue a little flat, tense your throat, and round your lips slightly.
You’ll hear it: ت taps, ط thuds.
Where each sound is made
Both use the tip of the tongue behind the teeth. The marker dot is the same for both — the difference is purely the tongue’s shape.
Taa
where the sound lives
- Place
- Tip of the tongue behind the upper teeth
- Manner
- Stop — a light, crisp tap
- Voiced
- no — breath only
Tip: Exactly like the t in 'tea'. Keep it short and light.
Tah
where the sound lives
- Place
- Tip of the tongue behind the teeth, tongue flat
- Manner
- Stop — a heavy, deep thud
- Voiced
- no — breath only
Tip: Tense the throat and flatten the tongue — think of a heavier, slower t.
The words that prove it
One letter separates these words — and their meanings are worlds apart.
Minimal pairs — ت vs ط
Mind the shape! ت and ط look alike, and sloppy handwriting mixes them up. Remember: ت has two dots and a small loop, ط has no dots and a big, tall loop. When in doubt, the bigger loop is the heavy letter.
Fill your word bank
Tap any word to hear it. Listen for the heavy thud of ط.
| With ت (light t) | With ط (heavy t) |

| تَفَّاحَة — apple | طَرِيق — road |
| تِلْمِيذ — student | مَطْبَخ — kitchen |
| وَقْت — time | طَيْر — bird |

Wrap up
ت taps, ط thuds. Like the heavy s of ص, ط is part of the same “heavy team” — learn one and the others feel familiar. You’re building a native ear, one letter at a time. 🎯
