Once you know 1–20, the rest of the numbers are easy: you only need the tens, plus one joining pattern. Tap any number above to hear it.
The 21–99 pattern
Numbers between the tens are built as unit + و (wa, “and”) + ten:
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| واحد وعشرون | waahid wa 3ishroon | twenty-one |
| خمسة وثلاثون | khamsa wa thalaathoon | thirty-five |
| سبعة وأربعون | sab3a wa arba3oon | forty-seven |
| تسعة وخمسون | tis3a wa khamsoon | fifty-nine |
The unit comes first, then و, then the ten — the opposite order from English.
The tens
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| عشرون | 3ishroon | twenty |
| ثلاثون | thalaathoon | thirty |
| أربعون | arba3oon | forty |
| خمسون | khamsoon | fifty |
| ستون | sittoon | sixty |
| سبعون | sab3oon | seventy |
| ثمانون | thamaanoon | eighty |
| تسعون | tis3oon | ninety |
| مئة | mi’a | one hundred |
Numbers in real life
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| عمري خمسة وعشرون سنة | 3umree khamsa wa 3ishroon sana | I am twenty-five years old |
| السعر خمسون ريالا | as-si3r khamsoon riyaalan | the price is fifty riyals |
| عندي أربعون كتابا | 3indee arba3oon kitaaban | I have forty books |
| مئة بالمئة | mi’a bil-mi’a | one hundred percent |
| ألف شكر | alf shukr | a thousand thanks |
Cultural note
Large numbers are often grouped by thousands, and the word ألف (alf) is used in many everyday expressions — ألف شكر (alf shukr, “a thousand thanks”) is a warm way to thank someone. When haggling, saying a number on its own with a questioning tone is enough: خمسون؟ (khamsoon?, “fifty?”).
