The Definite Article الـ (Al-)

English has two articles — a and the. Arabic only has one: الـ (al-). You stick it on the front of a word and it becomes “the”. Simple, right? Let’s see it in action.

Sticking الـ on a word

Take a noun like كتاب (kitaab, a book). Add الـ and it becomes:

The same trick works for almost every noun:

Notice how the word keeps its meaning — only the definiteness changes. If a word already ends in a ـة (taa marbuta) or begins with a vowel letter, the rules stay the same: الـ still just glues onto the front.

Why “al-” is sometimes “as-”

Here’s the fun part. When the word after الـ starts with one of the sun letters (حروف شمسية), the l of الـ gets absorbed and doubled instead:

With the moon letters (حروف قمرية), the l stays clear:

The names give it away: “sun” (شمس) is a sun letter, “moon” (قمر) is a moon letter. Memorize the letters by their sounds — this is pure phonetics, not grammar rules to memorize.

Using it in a sentence

You now have the most useful tool in Arabic: “the”. Try these:

البيت كبير — The house is big. الكتاب جديد — The book is new. الشمس حارة — The sun is hot.
