The Arabic Letter Daad (ض) — How to Pronounce & Write

Tap to listen

daad

Harakat

Daad (ض) is the fifteenth letter of the Arabic alphabet and produces the emphatic voiced alveolar stop — a “heavy” or “dark” version of the “d” sound with no direct English equivalent. It is a full connector, joining both the letter before and after it. Daad shares the same loop shape as Saad (ص), but is distinguished by a single dot above the loop.

How to pronounce it

SoundIPAEnglish approximation
ض/dˤ/heavy “d” — no exact English match
  • Tip: Start by saying a normal English “d” sound. Now raise the back of your tongue toward the roof of your mouth while keeping the tip touching the ridge behind your upper teeth. Your lips should round slightly. The result is a deeper, more resonant “d” that sounds “thicker” than the plain Daal. Think of the sound you make when emphatically saying “definitely” — but with more weight and resonance.
  • Common mistake: Do not let the sound become a plain “d” or lose the voicing. Daad is voiced — your vocal cords SHOULD vibrate. Also avoid pulling the tongue too far back, which can distort the sound. The key is raising the back of the tongue while keeping the tip firmly touching the alveolar ridge.

Key rule: Daad is a four-letter connector — it joins on both sides. The loop shape is always visible, but the descending tail only appears in the isolated and final positions. In initial and medial positions, the loop connects directly to the next letter without the tail. The single dot above the loop is always present.

Watch out for: ص (Saad) and د (Daal)

Daad (ض) shares its emphatic nature with Saad (ص), and its base “d” sound with Daal (د). Understanding these relationships is key to mastering the letter.

Practice tip

  1. Heavy D drill: Say “d” normally, then raise the back of your tongue while keeping the “d” position. The sound should become deeper and more resonant. Practice switching between Daal (light d) and Daad (heavy d) to feel the difference.
  2. Position practice: Write Daad in all four positions five times each:
    • Isolated: ض
    • Initial: ـض (as in ضَرْب)
    • Medial: ـضـ (as in مَضِيق)
    • Final: ــض (as in مَض)
  3. Word pairs: Practice these minimal pairs to hear the contrast:
    • دَرْس (lesson) vs ضَرْب (hit)
    • دَعْوَة (call) vs ضَعِيف (weak)
    • دَم (blood) vs ضَمِير (conscience)
  4. Sentence drill: Say this sentence slowly, focusing on the Daad sounds: “ضَحِكَ الضَّعِيفُ مِنَ الضَرُورَةِ وَحَمَلَ ضَمِيرَهُ عَلَى الضَّرْبِ” (The weak one laughed at the necessity and carried his conscience to the strike). Each ض should be deep and emphatic.

Frequently asked questions

Why is Arabic called the language of ḍād?

Daad is famously unique to Arabic — so distinctive that classical writers called Arabic لغة الضاد, the language of ḍād. No other major language uses this emphatic voiced d.

How is daad different from daal?

Emphasis and darkness. Daal is a plain front d; daad raises the back of the tongue for a heavy, resonant version.

How is daad different from saad?

Voicing. Saad hisses without vocal-cord vibration; daad is its voiced stop partner — same emphatic posture, but with a d-style release.
