Demographics

total registered population (SCB, 2025)
Sweden does not maintain an official population census that directly records people's religious identity. Statistics Sweden (SCB) records demographic information such as country of birth and citizenship, while religious affiliation is not included as a standard population-register variable.
Academic literature has estimated the broader population with a Muslim family or cultural background at approximately 500,000–800,000 people, although this range includes people who may not identify as religious Muslims.
Another frequently cited estimate from the Pew Research Center put the Muslim share of Sweden's population at 8.1% in 2016, but this is an older estimate and should not be presented as a current 2026 count.
The page should describe Sweden's Muslim population as a large but difficult-to-measure minority, rather than giving one number as if it were an official census result.
A closer look
A Diverse Muslim Community
Sweden's Muslim community includes people from many national, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Swedish government research has documented substantial theological, ethnic and linguistic diversity among Muslims in Sweden.
This diversity can matter when looking for marriage compatibility. Two Muslims may share the same religion while having very different expectations about language, family involvement, religious practice, nationality, culture, gender roles, finances and where they want to live. A serious matching process can therefore consider compatibility beyond religious identity alone.
City context
Islam in Stockholm
Stockholm is one of Sweden's main centers of Muslim life and Islamic organizations. A reliable current figure for the number of Muslims living specifically in Stockholm Municipality or Greater Stockholm was not found.
Older research provides some indication of concentration. A 2008 Muslims in the EU: Cities Report estimated that around half of Sweden's Muslim population lived in the Stockholm metropolitan area, while approximately 10–15% lived in Gothenburg. These figures are too old to present as current 2026 population estimates.
Several parts of Stockholm have long-established Muslim communities, including Rinkeby, Tensta, Husby, Kista, Skärholmen, Fittja, Botkyrka and Södertälje. Substantial Muslim communities also exist in Malmö and Gothenburg.
Stockholm metro
~50%
of Sweden's Muslim population was estimated to live in the Stockholm metropolitan area (2008 figure — too old for current estimates).
Law & practice
Muslim Marriage Law and Customs in Sweden
Marriage in Sweden is governed nationally by the Swedish Marriage Code (Äktenskapsbalk). Before a couple can marry, they must apply to the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) for a consideration of impediments to marriage (hindersprövning). The certificate of no impediment is valid for four months.
A Muslim marriage ceremony can be legally valid under Swedish law if the relevant religious community has been granted the right to perform legally valid marriages by Kammarkollegiet, and the person performing the ceremony has also been individually authorized.
A private Nikah performed by an imam who does not have the required authorization should not automatically be assumed to create a legally valid Swedish marriage. Couples can also have a civil marriage and separately perform a Nikah as a religious ceremony.
Mahr is an Islamic marriage custom and is not a standard Swedish institution under the Marriage Code. Anyone wanting to make mahr legally enforceable should obtain Swedish legal advice.
Preferences matter
What Makes Muslim Marriage in Sweden Different?
Muslims looking for a spouse in Sweden may have different preferences. Sweden's Muslim population includes people from many national, ethnic and linguistic backgrounds. Some may prefer:
- A spouse who was born in Sweden
- Someone from a similar cultural or ethnic background
- Someone who speaks Swedish
- Someone who also speaks Arabic, Bosnian, Turkish, Persian, Kurdish, Somali, Urdu or another community language
- Someone who is practising
- Someone who is open to marrying a convert
- Someone already living in Stockholm, Malmö or Gothenburg
- Someone willing to relocate within Sweden
- Someone willing to relocate internationally
These preferences are personal and can differ significantly from one person to another. A serious matching process therefore needs to consider compatibility rather than matching people simply because they are both Muslim.
Immigration
Bringing a Spouse to Sweden
A foreign spouse may apply for a residence permit to live with a spouse or partner in Sweden through the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket). The exact rules depend on whether the person in Sweden is a Swedish citizen, EU/EEA citizen or non-EU resident.
Where the maintenance requirement applies, the person in Sweden must normally have enough income to support the household and suitable housing. For cohabiting spouses or partners, the current 2026 standard is SEK 10,314 per month after tax and housing costs.
Important: Sweden has enacted changes to family immigration rules that enter into force on 1 October 2026, including a higher maintenance requirement and additional conditions. Applicants should check the current Migrationsverket rules for the date of their application.
