Spain does not have a national census that directly counts people by Muslim religious identity. The National Statistics Institute (INE) collects some religion-related information through surveys, but religion is not used as a direct population count.

The latest detailed estimate is the 2024 demographic study by the Observatorio Andalusí and UCIDE, produced with the collaboration of the Comisión Islámica de España (CIE): an estimated 2,542,498 Muslims, approximately 5.2% of Spain's population.

The estimated Muslim population has increased in recent years. The same series reported 2,412,344 Muslims at the end of 2023, compared with 2,542,498 at the end of 2024.

The largest autonomous communities by estimated Muslim population are Catalonia (694,046), Andalusia (417,139), Madrid (323,700) and the Valencian Community (278,370).

A closer look

A Diverse Muslim Community

Muslims in Spain include several overlapping communities. Moroccan Muslims are the largest foreign-origin Muslim community, but the community also includes Algerian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Senegalese, Syrian, Spanish-born and convert communities.

This diversity can matter when looking for marriage compatibility. Two people may share the same religion but have different expectations about language, family involvement, religious practice, gender roles, nationality, food, traditions, where to live, and whether they want to remain in Spain or move abroad.

City context

Islam in Madrid

The 2024 demographic study estimates 323,700 Muslims in the Community of Madrid as of 31 December 2024, including 116,766 foreign Muslim residents and 206,934 Spanish Muslim residents.

A recent academic study cites the same figure and records 132 Muslim religious communities in the Community of Madrid. Lavapiés is particularly notable for its diverse Muslim population, including Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Moroccan and Senegalese communities.

Madrid's large and diverse Muslim population gives people looking for marriage access to communities from many different cultural backgrounds. Significant Muslim communities also exist in Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Málaga and other Spanish cities.

Law & practice

Muslim Marriage Law and Customs in Spain

Marriage law in Spain is governed primarily by the Spanish Civil Code and national legislation. The underlying legal rules are national, but the practical process can differ between Civil Registry offices and municipalities.

Spain has a formal cooperation agreement with the Comisión Islámica de España, and Spanish law gives civil effects to a Muslim marriage celebrated according to the Islamic form when the legal requirements are satisfied. Under Article 7 of Law 26/1992, a marriage celebrated according to Islamic law can have civil effects when the spouses meet the capacity requirements of the Civil Code.

A private or informal Nikah performed by an imam without following the Spanish legal procedure should not be assumed to be a legally recognised Spanish marriage. Couples can also marry through the ordinary civil procedure and then hold a separate Nikah.

Mahr is not a standard institution of Spanish civil marriage law. Anyone wishing to make mahr legally enforceable should obtain advice from a Spanish family lawyer.

Local administrative requirements can change. Couples should confirm the current requirements with the relevant Registro Civil before submitting documents.

Preferences matter

What Makes Muslim Marriage in Spain Different?

Muslims looking for a spouse in Spain may have different preferences. Spain's Muslim community includes people from many national and cultural backgrounds. Some may prefer:

  • A spouse who was born in Spain
  • Someone from a similar cultural or ethnic background
  • Someone who speaks Spanish
  • Someone who also speaks Arabic (Darija, Algerian, Levantine), Urdu, Punjabi, French or another community language
  • Someone who is practising
  • Someone who is open to marrying a convert
  • Someone already living in Madrid, Barcelona or another Spanish city
  • Someone willing to relocate within Spain
  • Someone willing to relocate internationally

These preferences are personal and can differ significantly from one person to another. A serious matching process therefore needs to consider compatibility rather than matching people simply because they are both Muslim.

Immigration

Bringing a Spouse to Spain

The immigration route depends on the status of the spouse already living in Spain. For a foreign resident who is legally resident in Spain and is not using the Spanish-national or EU free-movement regimes, the ordinary route is generally family reunification (reagrupación familiar).

For ordinary family reunification, the current Ministry of Inclusion guidance states that a household consisting of the sponsor and one reunited family member generally needs 150% of IPREM per month, with each additional family member generally adding 50% of IPREM per month.

As of 2026, the IPREM remains €600 per month. Using the monthly figure, 150% of IPREM is currently €900 per month for a two-person household. Marriage does not automatically give a foreign spouse unrestricted permission to live in Spain.

IPREM can change. The correct route depends on the sponsor's status — always verify against current Ministry of Inclusion guidance.
