Poland has a relatively small Muslim population compared with countries such as France, Germany or the United Kingdom. There is no single official figure that captures everyone who identifies as Muslim.
Muslim organizations have traditionally estimated the Muslim population at around 25,000 people. The U.S. Department of State's 2023 report cited this estimate and stated that most Muslims in Poland are Sunni, with approximately 10% being ethnic Tatars.
One of the most distinctive groups is the Polish-Lithuanian Tatar community. Muslim Tatars have lived in the lands of present-day Poland and Lithuania for centuries and are an established part of Polish Muslim history.
The modern Muslim population also includes people with roots in Arab countries, Turkey, South Asia, Africa, the Caucasus and other parts of the Muslim world, including students, professionals, businesspeople, refugees and converts.
A closer look
A Diverse Muslim Community
Muslims in Poland come from several different backgrounds. The Lipka Tatar community has centuries of history, while more recent Muslim communities developed through migration, education, business and international mobility.
This means that Muslim marriage in Poland does not refer to one particular ethnic group. Someone looking for a spouse may encounter Polish Muslims, Tatars, Arabs, Turks, South Asians, Africans and other communities.
City context
Islam in Warsaw
Warsaw is an important center for Poland's contemporary Muslim community. As Poland's capital and largest metropolitan area, Warsaw attracts international students, professionals, immigrants and diplomatic communities.
The city also has established Muslim organizations and mosques serving different communities. Warsaw's Muslim population is more internationally diverse than the country's historical Tatar Muslim communities in northeastern Poland.
Poland's historic Muslim Tatar community is particularly associated with the Podlaskie region. Places such as Bohoniki and Kruszyniany are well known for their historic Tatar Muslim heritage and mosques. Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław and Gdańsk also have Muslim communities.

Law & practice
Muslim Marriage Law and Customs in Poland
Poland distinguishes between a legally recognized marriage and a purely religious ceremony. Polish law allows certain religious marriages to have civil effects when the relevant religious organization is legally authorized, but a marriage performed according to Muslim religious rites alone does not have civil legal effects in Poland.
Official Polish government material specifically states that a marriage conducted according to Muslim religious rites does not make the couple husband and wife under Polish law. A legally valid civil marriage must be concluded before the civil registry office.
A couple can have a Nikah as their religious ceremony, but they should not assume that the Nikah itself provides the legal rights and responsibilities of marriage in Poland.
The standard stamp duty for a civil marriage certificate procedure is PLN 84.
Preferences matter
What Makes Muslim Marriage in Poland Different?
Poland has an unusual combination of a historic indigenous Muslim community (the Lipka Tatars) and a relatively small modern immigrant Muslim population. Another important difference is the legal treatment of Nikah — a Muslim religious ceremony by itself does not have civil effects. Some may prefer:
- A spouse who was born in Poland
- Someone from a similar cultural or ethnic background
- Someone who speaks Polish
- Someone who also speaks Arabic, Turkish, Tatar or another community language
- Someone who is practising
- Someone who is open to marrying a convert
- Someone already living in Warsaw, Kraków or another Polish city
- Someone willing to relocate within Poland
- Someone willing to relocate internationally
These preferences are personal and can differ significantly from one person to another. A serious matching process therefore needs to consider compatibility rather than matching people simply because they are both Muslim.
Immigration
Bringing a Spouse to Poland
A foreign spouse of a Polish citizen can apply for a temporary residence permit based on the marriage. The Polish government states that a foreigner married to a Polish citizen does not need to satisfy the same additional migration requirements concerning stable income, health insurance or accommodation that can apply to other foreign residents.
Knowledge of Polish is not required to obtain the temporary residence permit as the spouse of a Polish citizen. Once the permit has been obtained, the spouse has free access to the Polish labour market.
Marriage itself does not automatically create a right to live or work in Poland. The foreign spouse needs the appropriate residence status. Permanent residence can be possible after 3 years of marriage and 2 years of continuous residence in Poland.
Key route
Spouse of Polish citizenNo income test
Foreign spouse of a Polish citizen does not need to satisfy additional income, health insurance or accommodation requirements.
Marriage alone does not give residence rights — the appropriate residence permit is required. Always verify against current Office for Foreigners guidance.
