Muslim Marriage Law and Customs in the Netherlands

Muslim couples in the Netherlands need to distinguish between civil marriage and a religious marriage (Nikah). Under Dutch law, the civil marriage ceremony conducted by the registrar must take place before a religious marriage ceremony.

The Dutch government specifically states that after the civil marriage ceremony, a couple may hold a religious ceremony in a church or mosque. A religious ceremony cannot legally take place before the civil ceremony.

For Muslims, this means that a Nikah and a legally recognized Dutch marriage are not necessarily the same thing.

Anyone planning to marry in the Netherlands should check the current requirements with the relevant Dutch municipality and, where immigration is involved, the Dutch Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND).
