Moroccan Muslims — largest nationality group
Italy has a large and diverse Muslim population. According to the ISMU Foundation's 2025 estimates, there were more than 1.7 million Muslims among Italy's foreign residents, representing about 31% of the foreign-resident population.
This figure does not fully capture Italian citizens who are Muslim, including Italian-born Muslims and converts. ISMU estimated around 1.6 million in 2024, meaning the estimate increased by roughly 100,000 in one year.
Moroccans were the largest Muslim nationality group (approximately 416,000), followed by Bangladeshis (176,000), Pakistanis (165,000) and Albanians (158,000). The community includes people with North African, Balkan, South Asian, Arab and other backgrounds.
A closer look
A Diverse Muslim Community
Muslim life in Italy is not centered around a single ethnic community. Moroccans have historically been one of the largest Muslim-origin populations, but there are also significant communities from Albania, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
The growth of South Asian communities is particularly visible. ISMU reported strong growth among Bangladeshi and Pakistani Muslim residents between 2024 and 2025. For marriage, this diversity matters — two Muslims in Italy may have completely different expectations.
City context
Islam in Milan
Milan is one of the most important centers of Muslim life in Italy. The wider Lombardy region has one of the country's largest Muslim populations, with a 2025 ISMU estimate putting the number at almost 400,000 Muslims.
Milan has Islamic centers and mosques serving communities from Morocco, Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Bosnia and other countries. The Al-Wahid Mosque has been officially recognized as a place of worship by the city since 2000.
Other cities with established Muslim communities include Rome, Turin, Bologna, Brescia, Bergamo and Genoa.

Law & practice
Muslim Marriage Law and Customs in Italy
Italian law recognizes civil marriage. Foreign nationals can marry in Italy but normally need a declaration from their country's competent authority confirming there is no impediment to the marriage (nulla osta).
An Islamic Nikah performed by an imam or Islamic center is not automatically the same thing as an Italian civil marriage. Italy does have legal frameworks under which certain religious marriages can obtain civil effects, but these depend on the religious community and the applicable legal agreement.
For a Muslim couple who want full legal recognition in Italy, the safest approach is to make sure the marriage is properly registered under Italian civil law. A couple may choose to have a civil marriage and then hold a separate Nikah.
A marriage celebrated outside Italy can potentially be recognized in Italy, but it must satisfy the relevant requirements and may need to be registered with an Italian municipality.
Preferences matter
What Makes Muslim Marriage in Italy Different?
Italy's Muslim community is large but highly diverse, with significant communities from Morocco, Albania, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Egypt and many other countries. The composition is also changing, with South Asian communities growing significantly. Some may prefer:
- A spouse who was born in Italy
- Someone from a similar cultural or ethnic background
- Someone who speaks Italian
- Someone who also speaks Arabic, Bengali, Urdu, Albanian or another community language
- Someone who is practising
- Someone who is open to marrying a convert
- Someone already living in Milan, Rome or another Italian city
- Someone willing to relocate within Italy
- Someone willing to relocate internationally
These preferences are personal and can differ significantly from one person to another. A serious matching process therefore needs to consider compatibility rather than matching people simply because they are both Muslim.
Immigration
Bringing a Spouse to Italy
Italy provides family reunification routes for qualifying family members of foreign residents. A legally married spouse can generally qualify for family reunification when the sponsor is a non-EU citizen legally residing in Italy.
The sponsor normally needs to demonstrate adequate financial resources and suitable accommodation. For 2025, the government migration portal gave an example of €10,504 of annual income for reunifying one family member and €14,000 for two.
A spouse who receives the appropriate Italian residence authorization can generally work in Italy without needing a separate work authorization. The exact rights depend on the residence status issued.
