2011

most recent Census year with a published Muslim count

Hungary's Muslim community is relatively small compared with the country's largest religious communities. There is no current official count that gives a precise national Muslim population.

The 2011 Hungarian Census recorded 5,579 people identifying as Muslim. This is a historical Census figure, not an estimate of Hungary's Muslim population today.

Hungary's most recent completed Census took place in 2022, when the Hungarian Central Statistical Office recorded a population of 9,603,634 on 1 October 2022. The religion question was voluntary, and the published English-language summary does not provide a separately stated national Muslim count.

For that reason this page does not assign a precise 2022 or 2026 Muslim population figure. The community includes Hungarian converts, families with Muslim heritage, international students, professionals and migrants from many regions.

A closer look

A Diverse Muslim Community

Muslims in Hungary have a variety of cultural and family backgrounds. The community includes Hungarian converts, people from families with Muslim heritage, international students, professionals and migrants from different regions.

Hungarian is the country's official language, while English is widely used in international, educational and professional settings, especially in Budapest and university communities. Depending on family background, Muslims may also speak Arabic, Turkish, Urdu, Bengali or other languages. Language, ethnicity, nationality and religious identity do not necessarily correspond.

City context

Muslim Marriage in Budapest

Budapest is the natural focus for Muslim life in Hungary. As the capital and largest city, it is an important centre for international education, business, tourism and cultural life, and it draws Muslims from many different backgrounds.

Some Muslims in Budapest are Hungarian-born or have family roots in the country; others are international students, workers or migrants. Their languages, cultural traditions and approaches to religious life can differ considerably. Mosques and Islamic organisations provide spaces for prayer, religious learning, community activities and guidance, though the role they play in introductions and marriage varies between individuals and communities.

Living in the capital may offer access to a wider range of people and international networks than a smaller town, but it does not automatically make finding a compatible spouse easy. Muslims also live in Debrecen, Szeged, Pécs and other university and regional centres. This page does not assign Muslim population totals to individual cities, because no verified city-level Census figures are available.

Law & practice

Muslim Marriage Law and Customs in Hungary

Hungary requires a civil marriage for state legal recognition. A religious ceremony alone — including a nikah performed at a mosque — does not by itself establish a legally recognised marriage under Hungarian law.

A couple must report their intention to marry to the appropriate registrar (anyakönyvvezető) and follow the civil marriage procedure. The intention must generally be declared at least 30 days before the planned ceremony, two witnesses are required, and a waiver of the waiting period may be available in qualifying circumstances. Adults aged 18 and over may marry if legally capable; people aged 16–17 may marry only with the required authorisation.

Foreign nationals may need additional documents, such as a valid passport, a birth certificate, evidence of civil status or that there is no legal impediment, and documents relating to a previous divorce or the death of a former spouse. Official authentication, legalisation or a certified Hungarian translation may also be required, and an interpreter must be provided where a person does not understand Hungarian sufficiently. The exact requirements depend on the documents, country of origin and applicable international agreements.

A nikah may involve consent, an offer and acceptance of marriage, witnesses, mahr and other religious requirements, and family involvement varies between couples. Whatever customs a couple follows, both parties should freely consent, and the religious ceremony does not replace the civil marriage requirements.

Rules can change. Always confirm the current marriage requirements with the competent Hungarian registrar before making plans.

Preferences matter

What Makes Muslim Marriage in Hungary Different?

The main differences are the relatively small size of Hungary's Muslim community, the country's international and local mix, and the strict separation between civil marriage and nikah. Some Muslims may find that their immediate family, friendship or community networks offer a limited number of potential spouses, while access to community networks and services also varies by location. Some may prefer:

  • A spouse who was born in Hungary
  • Someone from a similar cultural or ethnic background
  • Someone who speaks Hungarian
  • Someone who also speaks Arabic, Turkish, Urdu, Bengali or another community language
  • Someone who is practising
  • Someone who is open to marrying a convert
  • Someone already living in Budapest
  • Someone willing to relocate within Hungary
  • Someone willing to relocate internationally

These preferences are personal and can differ significantly from one person to another. Some people want parents or relatives to play an active role in introductions; others prefer to begin independently and involve family later. A serious matching process therefore needs to consider compatibility rather than matching people simply because they are both Muslim.

Immigration

Bringing a Spouse to Hungary

Marriage does not automatically grant a foreign spouse the right to live in Hungary. A spouse must qualify under the relevant residence rules, and the sponsor's nationality and residence-permit category can be decisive. Hungary distinguishes between family members of Hungarian citizens, family members of certain foreign residents, and relatives of people holding particular residence permits.

The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (NDGAP) publishes the rules for a residence permit for the purpose of family reunification. Eligible family members can include the spouse of a Hungarian citizen or of certain foreign nationals with qualifying residence status. Applicants generally need evidence of the family relationship and must meet conditions that can include accommodation, financial resources and health coverage. For a foreign spouse of a Hungarian citizen, a foreign marriage certificate may need to be registered in Hungary first.

Hungary's current rules restrict family reunification for some sponsor categories. The NDGAP factsheet lists holders of certain employment residence permits, guest-worker residence permits, student or training residence permits, seasonal employment permits and White Cards among those whose family members may not receive a family-reunification residence permit under the relevant rules. For guest workers, a limited exception exists for a child born in Hungary during the permit's validity. EU/EEA citizens and their family members may follow a different free-movement route.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions people ask before applying.

How can I find a Muslim spouse in Hungary?
You can apply to our Muslim marriage matching service and tell us about yourself and the type of spouse you are looking for. Hungary has a small but diverse Muslim community, so personal networks can be limited. We review every application privately and contact you if we find someone who may be a suitable match.
How many Muslims live in Hungary?
The 2011 Hungarian Census recorded 5,579 people identifying as Muslim. Hungary's 2022 Census counted a population of 9,603,634, but its published English-language summary does not provide a separately stated national Muslim count. The 2011 figure is therefore a historical Census number, not an exact estimate for today.
Is there a Muslim community in Budapest?
Yes. Budapest is the main centre for Muslim life and international communities in Hungary. Muslims in the capital include Hungarian families, converts, international students, professionals and migrants, with varied cultural traditions and approaches to marriage.
Can I have a nikah in Hungary?
Yes, you can arrange an Islamic marriage ceremony, but a nikah alone does not establish a legally recognised marriage under Hungarian law. Couples who want both religious and legal recognition should arrange the required civil marriage with the competent registrar as well as their religious ceremony.
Can foreigners get married in Hungary?
Foreign nationals can marry in Hungary if they meet the legal requirements and provide the necessary documents. Depending on their circumstances, these may include passports, birth certificates, proof of civil status, legalised foreign documents and certified Hungarian translations. The exact requirements should be confirmed with the competent registrar before making plans.
Can I bring my spouse to Hungary after marriage?
Possibly, depending on your nationality and residence status. Family-reunification rules may allow a qualifying spouse of a Hungarian citizen or certain foreign residents to apply for residence, but restrictions apply to several categories of residence permits. Marriage itself does not guarantee permission to live in Hungary.
Can a foreign worker in Hungary sponsor a spouse?
Not necessarily. Hungary restricts family reunification for some categories of foreign workers and guest workers, and certain employment-permit holders are specifically excluded under the relevant rules. A sponsor should check the exact category of their residence permit with the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing before assuming that a spouse can join them.
Do Muslims in Hungary have to marry someone from the same cultural background?
No. Muslims in Hungary have a variety of cultural and family backgrounds, and individual preferences differ. Some people prefer a spouse who shares their heritage or language, while others prioritise religious compatibility, personality and shared goals across cultural backgrounds. You can explain your own preferences when you apply, and we review them privately.
