Finland has a relatively small but established Muslim population. Official Finnish statistics count people according to membership in registered religious communities rather than asking every resident whether they identify as Muslim.
According to Statistics Finland, 24,057 people were members of an Islamic religious community at the end of 2023. This represented about 0.43% of Finland's total population at that time. The official figure should not be interpreted as the total number of Muslims living in Finland.
More recent estimates are considerably higher. A 2022 U.S. State Department report noted estimates ranging from approximately 65,000 to 180,000 Muslims in Finland in 2021, while Pew Research Center's 2017 estimate was approximately 150,000.
The Muslim population includes people with backgrounds from Somalia, North Africa, Iraq, Afghanistan, the Balkans, Syria, Turkey, Iran and other countries. Finland also has a historic Tatar Muslim community whose presence goes back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A Diverse Muslim Community
Muslims in Finland are not one single ethnic or cultural group. The community includes:
This diversity means that Muslims looking for marriage in Finland may have very different expectations concerning language, family involvement, culture and religious practice. For a matchmaking service, it is therefore useful to allow applicants to describe what they are looking for.
City context
Islam in Helsinki
Helsinki is the most important urban center for Finland's Muslim community. The Helsinki metropolitan area contains a large share of Finland's immigrant population, and the city has communities speaking many languages.
In 2024, Somali was spoken as a mother tongue by about 2.2% of Helsinki's population and Arabic by about 1.6%. These language statistics do not directly measure the Muslim population, but they illustrate the city's significant African and Middle Eastern communities.
The wider Helsinki metropolitan area includes Helsinki, Espoo and Vantaa and is an important center for mosques, Islamic organizations, halal businesses and Muslim community activities. For people looking for a Muslim spouse, Helsinki and the surrounding metropolitan area are likely to provide a larger pool of potential matches.

Law & practice
Muslim Marriage Law and Customs in Finland
Finnish law allows marriage through either a civil ceremony or a religious ceremony. A religious marriage may be performed by a person who has the legal right to conduct marriage ceremonies within a registered religious community.
Before marriage, the couple must request an examination of impediments to marriage. The certificate resulting from this examination is valid for four months.
If a Muslim couple simply performs a private Islamic ceremony without an authorized marriage officiant, the ceremony should not automatically be assumed to create a legally valid Finnish marriage.
For a religious marriage to be legally valid in Finland, the ceremony must be conducted through a religious community with the legal right to perform marriages and by an authorized person.
Finnish law does not treat Islamic marriage customs (mahr) as automatically creating legal obligations. If a couple wants a financial agreement to have legal effect in Finland, they should obtain Finnish legal advice.
Preferences matter
What Makes Muslim Marriage in Finland Different?
Muslims looking for marriage in Finland may come from very different cultural and family backgrounds. Some may prefer:
- A spouse who was born in Finland
- Someone from a similar cultural or ethnic background
- Someone who speaks Finnish
- Someone who also speaks Arabic, Somali, Kurdish, Persian, Turkish or another community language
- Someone who is practising
- Someone who is open to marrying a convert
- Someone already living in Helsinki or another Finnish city
- Someone willing to relocate within Finland
- Someone willing to relocate internationally
These preferences are personal and can differ significantly from one person to another. A serious matching process therefore needs to consider compatibility rather than matching people simply because they are both Muslim.
Immigration
Bringing a Spouse to Finland
A spouse who wants to move to Finland generally needs a residence permit based on family ties. If the spouse in Finland is a Finnish citizen, Migri provides a residence permit route for the foreign spouse.
For 2026, the general family-income thresholds depend on where the family lives and how many people are in the household. For two adults living together in a municipality outside the highest-cost areas, the basic threshold is approximately €1,550 net per month before adding amounts for children.
A spouse who receives a family-based residence permit has an unrestricted right to work after the permit has been granted.

Requirements can change — always verify against current Migri guidance.
