Denmark does not maintain an official population register that records people's religious affiliation outside the Danish National Church. There is no single official figure for the number of Muslims living in Denmark.
A 2020 U.S. Department of State report cited estimates of approximately 280,000–310,000 Muslims, while a University of Copenhagen estimate put the figure at around 320,000. A later 2021 report cited an academic estimate of approximately 250,000.
Copenhagen Municipality estimated in 2025 that approximately 9% of residents had a Muslim background, corresponding to around 60,000 people — a local estimate rather than an official religious census.
Muslim communities are particularly visible in Copenhagen, Aarhus and Odense, and include people from Turkey, Pakistan, the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, the Balkans, Somalia and other regions.
A closer look
A Diverse Muslim Community
Muslims in Denmark do not form one single ethnic or cultural group. The country's Muslim population includes people and families with backgrounds from Turkey, Pakistan, the Middle East, North Africa, South Asia, the Balkans, Somalia and other regions.
This diversity can affect how people approach marriage. Some families may prefer a spouse from a similar cultural background, while others are more open to marrying someone from another country or cultural tradition.
City context
Islam in Copenhagen
Copenhagen is one of the main centers of Muslim life in Denmark. Copenhagen Municipality estimated in 2025 that approximately 9% of residents had a Muslim background, corresponding to around 60,000 people.
Nørrebro has received particular academic attention because of its large and diverse minority population and its history of Muslim community organizations. Copenhagen also has established Islamic institutions and purpose-built mosques.
Muslim communities are not limited to the capital. Aarhus and Odense also have significant Muslim populations, and Muslim organizations exist in many other Danish cities.

Law & practice
Muslim Marriage Law and Customs in Denmark
Denmark recognizes both civil marriages and certain religious marriages. Under the Danish Marriage Act, a marriage can be entered into through a civil ceremony or a religious ceremony performed by authorized religious ministers.
A Muslim religious ceremony can have legal effect when it is conducted through a religious community and officiant who have the necessary authority under Danish law. Otherwise, a private Nikah should not be assumed to provide the same legal status as a Danish civil marriage.
Couples who want to marry in Denmark generally need a certificate confirming that the legal conditions for marriage have been met. As of 1 January 2026, the processing fee is DKK 2,100.
Danish law also contains rules designed to prevent marriages of convenience, and authorities can examine the circumstances surrounding the relationship.
Preferences matter
What Makes Muslim Marriage in Denmark Different?
Muslim marriage in Denmark combines Danish family law with the religious and cultural traditions of different Muslim communities. An important distinction is between religious marriage and legally valid marriage. Some may prefer:
- A spouse who was born in Denmark
- Someone from a similar cultural or ethnic background
- Someone who speaks Danish
- Someone who also speaks Arabic, Turkish, Urdu, Somali, Persian or another community language
- Someone who is practising
- Someone who is open to marrying a convert
- Someone already living in Copenhagen, Aarhus or another Danish city
- Someone willing to relocate within Denmark
- Someone willing to relocate internationally
These preferences are personal and can differ significantly from one person to another. A serious matching process therefore needs to consider compatibility rather than matching people simply because they are both Muslim.
Immigration
Bringing a Spouse to Denmark
Denmark has relatively detailed requirements for family reunification with a spouse. The Danish Immigration Service states that spouses normally need to be at least 24 years old. There are exceptions in certain circumstances.
The spouse living in Denmark will normally need to have an independent and reasonably sized residence, and the sponsor normally needs to be self-supporting. A financial guarantee of DKK 61,709.34 is normally required (2026 amount).
The couple normally have to satisfy an integration requirement together, which can involve Danish or English language ability, employment and education conditions.
Financial guarantee
2026DKK 61,709
standard financial guarantee for family reunification. May be reduced if the foreign spouse passes specified Danish-language tests.
Denmark also has a 24-year age requirement. Requirements can change — always verify against current Danish Immigration Service guidance.
