Muslims in Austria come from many different backgrounds. Turkish and Bosnian communities have played an important historical role, while more recent communities include people from Arab countries, Afghanistan, Iran, South Asia and other regions.
The majority of Austrian Muslims are Sunni, while Shia, Alevi and other Muslim communities are also present. The Islamic Religious Community in Austria (IGGÖ) is the legally recognized Islamic religious community.
A closer look
A Diverse Muslim Community
Muslim life in Austria is not based on one ethnic or cultural group. Turkish Muslims have had a long-established presence, while Bosniak Muslims became especially important through migration from Bosnia and Herzegovina.
This diversity matters for marriage because nationality alone may tell you very little about a person's expectations. Two Muslims living in Austria can have very different views about religious practice, family involvement, language and where they want to live.
City context
Islam in Vienna
Vienna is the main center of Muslim life in Austria. According to the City of Vienna's 2021 figures, approximately 284,930 people identified as Muslim, representing about 14.8% of the city's population.
Vienna's Muslim population includes long-established Turkish and Bosnian communities as well as Arab, Afghan, South Asian and other Muslim communities. The population is spread across different parts of the city.
Other Austrian cities and regions also have Muslim communities. Larger urban and industrial areas generally have more Muslim residents, while Vorarlberg has historically had a significant Muslim presence.

Law & practice
Muslim Marriage Law and Customs in Austria
Austria requires a civil marriage for a marriage to be legally valid. The couple must personally appear before a civil registrar and declare that they want to marry.
A purely religious marriage is not legally valid under Austrian law. An Islamic ceremony can be conducted by a theologically qualified person in the presence of at least two witnesses, but the civil marriage normally takes place at the registry office first.
A private Nikah by itself should not be treated as a legally recognized Austrian marriage. Muslim couples who want both religious and legal marriage can generally have the civil marriage first and then conduct the Islamic ceremony.
Foreign nationals can marry in Austria, but international couples may have additional documentation requirements depending on their nationality.
Preferences matter
What Makes Muslim Marriage in Austria Different?
Austria has a relatively large Muslim population for a Central European country. Vienna in particular is highly diverse, with nearly 285,000 Muslims. Some may prefer:
- A spouse who was born in Austria
- Someone from a similar cultural or ethnic background
- Someone who speaks German
- Someone who also speaks Turkish, Bosnian, Arabic, Persian or another community language
- Someone who is practising
- Someone who is open to marrying a convert
- Someone already living in Vienna or another Austrian city
- Someone willing to relocate within Austria
- Someone willing to relocate internationally
These preferences are personal and can differ significantly from one person to another. A serious matching process therefore needs to consider compatibility rather than matching people simply because they are both Muslim.
Immigration
Bringing a Spouse to Austria
Austria has a formal family-reunification system. A foreign spouse of an Austrian citizen can receive the residence title "Family Member" if the relevant requirements are met. This title provides unrestricted access to the Austrian labor market.
For several family-reunification residence titles, applicants normally have to demonstrate A1-level German before immigration. Austria's migration authorities specifically list A1 German as a requirement for first applications, although exemptions exist.
Marriage to an Austrian citizen does not automatically give a foreign spouse Austrian citizenship. Austria also generally expects applicants to give up their previous nationality, although exceptions can apply.

Family Member titleA1
basic German generally required for first applications — though exemptions exist for certain categories.
The "Family Member" residence title provides unrestricted work rights. Always verify against current Austrian migration guidance.
