Arabic has several negation words, each used in specific contexts. Choosing the right one depends on the verb tense, sentence type, and level of formality.
The Main Negation Words
1. لا (lā) — “no” / “not”
The most versatile negation word. Works with present tense verbs, nouns, and adjectives.
| Usage | Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present verb | لا أعرف | lā a3rif | I do not know |
| Present verb | لا يتكلم | lā yatakallam | he does not speak |
| Noun | لا كتاب | lā kitaab | no book |
| Adjective | لا جيد | lā jayyid | not good |
2. ليس (laysa) — “is not” / “are not”
Used to negate nominal sentences (sentences without a verb). Always followed by a predicate in the accusative case.
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ليس جيداً | laysa jayyidan | it is not good |
| ليس طالباً | laysa ṭaaliban | he is not a student |
| ليست جميلة | laysat jameela | she is not beautiful |
| ليسوا هنا | laysuu huna | they are not here |
Important: After ليس, the predicate takes the accusative case (tanween fatḥ): ليس طالباً (not طالبٌ).
3. ما (mā) — “not” (common in spoken Arabic)
Very common in colloquial Arabic, especially in the Levant and Egypt.
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| ما بعرف | mā ba3rif | I don’t know (colloquial) |
| ما في مشكلة | mā fī mushkila | there is no problem |
| ما حدا | mā ḥada | nobody (colloquial) |
4. لم (lam) — “did not” (with past tense meaning)
Used to negate past tense actions, but the verb appears in present tense form:
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| لم أذهب | lam adhhab | I did not go |
| لم يأكل | lam ya’kul | he did not eat |
| لم نفهم | lam nafham | we did not understand |
Key rule: After لم, the verb is in the jussive mood (مجزوم) — it loses its final nunation and sometimes a letter.
5. لا (lā) — Prohibition (“do not!”)
Used with the imperative to give negative commands:
| Arabic | Transliteration | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| لا تأكل | lā ta’kul | do not eat |
| لا تتكلم | lā tatakallam | do not speak |
| لا تذهب | lā tadhhab | do not go |

Common Mistakes
1. Using ما in formal writing:
- ❌ ما أعرف (colloquial)
- ✅ لا أعرف (formal)
2. Forgetting accusative after ليس:
- ❌ ليس طالبٌ
- ✅ ليس طالباً
3. Wrong verb form after لم:
- ❌ لم أذهبت (past tense form)
- ✅ لم أذهب (jussive form)
4. Confusing لا and لم:
- لا أذهب — I do not go (present habitual)
- لم أذهب — I did not go (past action)
Cultural Notes
Negation in Arabic reflects cultural communication styles:
- Indirect negation is often preferred in formal contexts
- Double negation for emphasis: لا أحد (no one), لا شيء (nothing)
- Polite refusal uses softer negation: أعتذر (I apologize) instead of direct لا
